German Photograph Germaine Krull is one of the most emblematic artist of the Avant-garde during the 20s-40s as well as one of the most famous woman photographer.

This exhibition aims to present this great artist often less known and her work less analyzed than other photographers from the same period such as Man Ray, Moholy-Nagy or Kertész. Is it because she had a more chaotic career or because she spent some years in Asia without giving much news or that part of her work was destroyed?

Little is know about her and her work. Only two exhibitions one held in 1977 and another 1988 and a retrospective in 1999. Today, this new exhibition focuses on her Parisian period, between 1926 and 1935, and more precisely on the years of intensive activity between 1928 and 1933.

130 vintage prints are displayed to period documents, including the magazines and books in which Krull played such a unique and prominent role. The exhibition emphasizes her work and aesthetic innovations.

The show features many singular but also representative images from her prolific output, putting them in their original context.

Part of her work is strongly linked with VU magazine, created in 1928 and for which she published some 280 photographs but she has also collaborate with other publications such as Jazz, Variétés, Paris-Magazine, Art et Médecine... She is also best known for photographically-illustrated books such as her 1928 portfolio Métal.

This exhibition shows the extraordinary talent of Krull’s and her unique vision at that time, a vision that is hard to define because it adapted to its subjects with a mixture of charisma and empathy, while remaining constantly innovative in terms of its aesthetic. In her work, she developed a new form of reportage that was particularly congenial to her, affording freedom of expression and freedom from taboos as well as closeness to the subject.
