Tube : Trinité (12), Saint Georges (12), Pigalle (2,12)

Located in the family house of the painter, this museums has been totally created by Gustave Moreau himself.

The apartments on the first floor can be seen as a private museum where can be seen family portraits and gifts by others artists such as Theodore Chassériau or Edgar Degas. The second and third floor are occupied by the studios full of paintings and watercolors. More than 4000 drawings will give you an good idea about Moreau's technique as Master of Symbolism.

This place has kept its original magic atmosphere, located in the heart of the Nouvelle Athènes a few steps away from Montmartre.

Moreau has for a long time though about what will become his art after his death and was thinking that only the masterpieces kept all together would bring sense to understand his art.

In 1895 he ask an architect to start building those big studio in his own apartment, keeping only the ground and first floor. The following year he starts to classify his paintings and drawings by theme for the future museum.
