The foundation was created in 2003 following the wish of Martine Frank and Cartier Breton daughter. It aims is to preserve and exhibit the work of French photographer Henri Cartier Breton.

The collection consists of original prints, contact sheets, drawings, publications, correspondence, rare books, albums, movies, videos, posters, invitations, etc ... Magnum agency manages the distribution of archive footage and exhibitions that are part of the Foundation's collections.

Both the Foundation's exhibition spaces alternately present works by Henri Cartier-Bresson and other artists at the rate of three exhibitions a year.

Each year, the work of the HCB Award winner is exposed to HCB Foundation and is published on this occasion.
