The origin of the museum dates back to 1871 when the The Croatian Teaching and Literary Union started to collect material from school in prevision of the opening of a museum. A new building was built for this purpose and the museum officially opened in 1901.

The main task of the institution is to collect, study and exhibit past and present tool of the Croatian educational and pedagogical system.

The Museum holds collections of teaching materials and school equipment, students and teachers' textbooks and handbooks, school regulations, photographs and documents on education.
