The museum is dedicated to Dutch writer and poet Willem Bilderdijk father of the spiritual movement that is called "Het Réveil", which tried to give a Christian answer to the ideals of the French Revolution. The collection contains some manuscripts (letters and draft notes) write by Willem but also special attributes including casts.

The museum features portraits, drawings, engravings and other art objects related or dedicated to Willem some by leading artists of the 1800s. This art collection is partly based on the collection of JFM Sterck which was purchased in 1931.
